Steven Colley has done a great service
for musicians. He has developed a system for us to get In Tune....truly
In Tune.
With ourselves, with one another,
within large and small ensembles.
His clear, concise, and well-formulated
explanations of Pure Intonation are simply a MUST-READ for all
musicians; even keyboardists and those playing fretted instruments.
The accompanying CD, then, becomes a MUST-PLAY for anyone striving
for better, if not perfect, intonation.
As brass players, and specifically
trombonists, we have no excuse for playing out of tune. You've
probably heard the ranting band director shouting: "Trombones....that's
just a giant tuning slide you've got in your hands! You have NO
excuse!" Guess what? That band director is right. We really
don't have an excuse for poor intonation. But what we often lack
are the listening skills to perfect our tuning. We might all have
been told to lower our Major Thirds, raise our Minor Thirds, look
out for Sevenths, etc. But by how much and why? If I'm making
my best possible sound, am I in tune? Can I make a great sound
and tune it with others?
TuneUp will answer these and other
concerns about Pure Intonation. The book and CD make for a great
companion to your Daily Routine. As an individual, it is of primary
importance that you play in tune with YOURSELF. No hopes can be
held of tuning an ensemble if individuals cannot do this. Once
this skill becomes honed throughout the ensemble, then a truly
spectacular blend and sound can be achieved.
Jazz Band , Marching Band, Wind
Ensemble and Orchestra Directors:
your group's overall intonation is dependent upon your weakest
player. Get that person to play in tune and the prospects for
the group get a whole lot brighter! TuneUp will help ALL of your
players; from the weakest to the very strongest.
Chamber Players: stop bickering and splitting hairs. Each person
sit down with TuneUp for a few weeks and employ it at the beginnig
of each rehearsal and HEAR the results. I can personally attest
to the miraculous and profound effects TuneUp can have on an ensemble.
I recommend this system to all of
my students and every ensemble director I meet. It's not a gimmick,
a trick, "smoke-and-mirrors", cover-up......it's a simple
to use, enjoyable and effective means to make better music.
